Download Monster Checkers Updated Source Code Soon

Last week a fateful game of Monster Checkers caused me to realize just how much more fun checkers could be if it only did this and that and the other thing. Besides, Marco Neumann produced some beautiful, appropriate, monster-friendly music that needed to be included. So, after a couple days of blissful coding, Monster Checkers turned out to be way more fun to play!

There’s plenty of new code in there and it’s compiled with Cocos2D 1.0.0. There were no snags compiling with the latest Cocos2D so everything is still hunky-dory. If you run into any snags compiling your projects with Cocos2D 1.0.0, then make sure to do a “Product > Clean”.

I can hardly wait to get the iPhone Game Kit updated so you guys can check out the code. First, I’m revising the book a little and sweeping over the codebase to make sure everything is extra readable and well commented. Expect an update to the iPhone Game Kit in the near future!

Also, do make sure to check out Marco’s site as a great resource for music or sound effects for your game. He’s an amazing fellow to work with.

Here’s what’s new with the Monster Checkers code:

  • Each monster has a unique name and number of kills
  • When a player moves it shows the score of each player, making the game a lot more competitive
  • Monsters now have funny victory noises and noises when they become giant
  • Monsters now make a special noise when they double jump
  • Monsters now jump up and down when they attack
  • If you don’t move for awhile, a monster will sometimes turn around and fart
  • Shaking the phone will cause the monsters to panic
  • Touch controls are more flexible
  • Now includes monstery music by Marco Neumann
  • A game can now be won if there are no more possible moves
  • Minimum iOS version lowered to 3.1.x so it works on old iPod touches
  • Built with Cocos2D 1.0.0

You will be able to download all the updates to Monster Checkers when we release the next update to the iPhone Game Kit. We will post to our blog when it comes out. In the meantime, enjoy coding and/or playing!

Here’s the link to play Monster Checkers on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch.
