New iPhone Game Kit 3.4 Update

iPhone Game Kit 3.4 Book Cover

Great news. We’ve just released the 3.4 version of the iPhone Game Kit! Much has been improved, especially the Xcode 4 projects & screenshots, Tiled 0.6.1 walkthrough, and TexturePacker guide.

A New Book

We’ve completely revamped the book and publishing guide. They are now 8.5″ x 11″ so more text and images fit into each page. There’s shadows, reflections, corner filigrees, sexy sans fonts, more links, bigger screenshots and images, wider margins, and a more descriptive, easier to browse table of contents.

We took special care to make sure that it’s easy to throw the book onto your iPad or iPhone and read it with iBooks. Just open up iTunes, drag the PDF onto your device, then open iBooks and choose Collections > PDFs.

New Source Code

We’ve updated the Quexlor Lite code included with the Kit with a plethora of enhancements from the Quexlor: Lands of Fate community project. The touch-based input is perhaps the single coolest improvement. It makes testing your game much easier in the simulator.

Template Project

We included a sample project you can use as a template for your own game. Just copy the sample project, rename its contents and go! It’s an easy way to start new ideas because all the Cocos2D stuff is already set up. Just launch the project and start making your idea come to life. You can even use the template for apps.

What’s Next

We are working diligently to bring you further enhancements to the book and the iPhone Game Kit framework. Keep your eye out for another release in the near future.
